In a moment of profound recognition, the design world comes together to celebrate Paolo Pininfarina, the visionary whose name has become synonymous with elegance, innovation, and timeless beauty. Posthumously awarded the 2024 American Prize for Design, Paolo’s legacy continues to shine brightly, honored by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.

Set against the backdrop of the forthcoming ‘The City and The World’ symposium in Athens, where the award will be presented on September 21, 2024, this accolade is a testament to Paolo’s extraordinary contributions to the world of design. His work, which spans automotive, industrial, furniture, and architectural design, reflects a commitment to excellence and a passion for pushing boundaries.

“Paolo Pininfarina’s designs are more than just objects; they are experiences, imbued with beauty and innovation,” said Christian Narkiewicz-Laine, President/CEO of The Chicago Athenaeum. “His ability to create landmark classics that stand the test of time is a hallmark of his genius.”

Born in Turin and educated as a mechanical engineer, Paolo Pininfarina carried forward the legacy of his grandfather, Battista “Pinin” Farina, infusing it with a modern sensibility that captivated the world. From his early roles at Cadillac and General Motors to his leadership within Pininfarina, Paolo was a driving force behind the company’s expansion into new markets and industries. His decision to establish Pininfarina’s presence in the Americas through a Miami branch was a bold move that opened new avenues for the brand, blending its rich heritage with contemporary innovation.

Under his leadership, Pininfarina achieved global acclaim, most notably through projects like the Sergio concept car, a tribute to his father, and the Automobili Pininfarina Battista, an electric hypercar that redefined luxury and sustainability. These achievements are a reflection of Paolo’s vision—a vision that was always forward-looking, yet deeply rooted in the tradition of Italian design.

Silvio Angori, CEO of Pininfarina, reflected on Paolo’s lasting impact: “Paolo’s legacy is one of inspiration, innovation, and a relentless pursuit of perfection. This award is a celebration of his life’s work and the indelible mark he has left on the world of design. We are committed to carrying his vision forward, ensuring that Pininfarina remains at the forefront of design excellence.”

As the design community gathers in Athens, the award serves as a powerful reminder of Paolo Pininfarina’s enduring influence. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit lives on in the masterpieces he created and the inspiration he provided to countless designers worldwide. The 2024 American Prize for Design is not just an honor—it’s a celebration of a life dedicated to beauty, creativity, and the pursuit of the extraordinary.
