Oh Thank Heaven: A Nostalgic Celebration of Art, Skate Culture, and 7-Eleven Magic
Oh Thank Heaven is more than just the name of Blue The Great’s latest art collection—it’s a heartfelt tribute to his childhood memories, skateboarding culture, and the iconic 7-Eleven brand. Known for his signature mummy motifs and vibrant colors, Blue brings his unique style to this collaboration, blending personal experiences with artistic innovation. From nostalgic skate decks to reimagined logos, Oh Thank Heaven reflects Blue’s journey of gratitude, growth, and joy, celebrating the freedom of youth while embracing the responsibilities of parenthood.
Oh Thank Heaven is a striking name for your new collection. What inspired the title, and How does it tie into the themes of the artwork?
The collection name is inspired by my love and appreciate for art, painting, and the convergence of skateboard culture. This felt like a childhood dream because 7-Eleven is a brand that has been with me forever, growing up on the west coast from Dallas to living in LA. It’s a real celebration of being thankful that my art journey has taken me to heights I never could have imagined. Everyday is a challenge when you’re building from scratch and everything’s on me. This moment with 7-Eleven felt like a celebration for the kid in me, and now having my own son to raise, it puts me in a brighter space in life, so “Oh Thank Heaven” felt appropriate.
Could you share the creative process behind this collection? Did it differ in any way from your previous works?
My creative process is always fluid, I don’t really like to overthink things until I have a concept and space to create, so we typically throw a ton of ideas at the wall until something sticks, and then I begin to align that with my colorful world. The synergy is always in my style and characters. So, this collection brings back some of my core elements like the signature mummy and clouds, but we were able to truly dive into 7-Eleven’s world and combine the things I love that have made them iconic. The skate deck is my favorite item because it’s the perfect blend of me in the work, and I haven’t done one in years. I also loved being able to flip the logo, it’s the first time they’ve ever done it. This collection brings all of the things people may have loved about my work in the past, with an authentic connection to a brand many have known and loved for a lifetime.
Your signature mummy motifs are a key part of your identity as an artist. How are they represented or reimagined in Oh Thank Heaven?
My signature mummy motifs are reflections of me and my life at different moments. When you see them you see bliss, playfulness, anger, anxiety, freedom, determination. All of these expressions of self and life are woven into the mummy and often follow my reality, but the art allows me to create a safe space and world for my characters, the way many of us wish we could do in real life. As art is my life source, it’s a form of therapy for me putting my signature on things to give them life.
This collection feels very personal. How does it reflect your current perspective on life or your artistic journey?
It’s the first collection I’ve had to design as a father, so my son is really inspiring me and keeping me motivated through the challenges of parenting. It’s a beautiful struggle, similar to the life of artists especially when you’re up and coming. This place in life is full of beautiful things and challenges. It’s a moment that I’m capturing where sometimes you just need to hop on a skate deck, grab a Slurpee and enjoy life unfiltered and unbothered.
My son is one and my manager, Johnnie Lovett of Unsurfaced™️, also has a two year old so when working on the inspiration for this collection, it was about authentically connecting my world with the brand, but also how could we really just bring joy to parents out there who can see themselves in this collection as an opportunity to celebrate their inner child and the freedom we often desire as parents that can feel like it’s slipping away a bit everyday.
You’ve collaborated with iconic brands like Nike. Did those experiences influence your approach to this collection?
Not at all. I approach every collection with a real hyperfocus on the partner-at-hand and how our worlds intertwine. I haven’t leaned into my love for skate culture in this way for some time, as well. This was truly digging into the memory banks of my time in and around 7-Eleven locations throughout my life, and really focusing on the things that made those moments special for me.
What role does color play in Oh Thank Heaven? How do you decide on the palette for your pieces?
We were literally sitting around the table (on Zoom, haha) discussing color options and realized if you hit add orange to my pallet it’s a perfect blend of our worlds. So choosing the color play was a bit of a no brainer on this collab. It’s also why we went darker on the backgrounds and materials for the drop. The bases of the tees, boards, and stickers all set up the colors to pop harder.
You’ve built a strong connection with your audience through your work. What message or emotions do you hope they take away from this collection?
I hope people feel like this is a moment they can celebrate their inner child who has grown to become a responsible, art loving, blissfully seeking adult and, possibly, a parent like me. We’re all searching for those moments to feel free and to feel loved, so I hope this collection does that for people. That they see themselves in the freedom of the character on the skate deck, or the clouds closing in on the 7-Eleven logo. I wanted this collection to feel fun and free spirited, but also purposeful and I think we were able to achieve that.
How has your artistic style evolved over the years, and where does Oh Thank Heaven fit in that evolution?
My artistic style continues to evolve into new mediums. I’m still a painter first, but I’m expanding my artistry into new mediums. Most immediately is tattooing. I love a huge mural, I’m talking hundreds of feet, but the idea of artwork that lives on the body forever is a new space of excitement for me. This collection is a nod to my roots, skateboarding, good times and vibes with friends, the freedom of being a kid making the store runs to 7-Eleven that were mom-approved. This collection reminds me to stay grounded and that the heaven’s got my back. As I soar and grow and evolve, I never want to forget or disconnect from the moments that made me who I am, whether big as a signature Jordan or simple as a skate ride to grab a Slurpee.
Art often draws from personal and cultural experiences. Are there any specific memories or influences that played a role in shaping this collection?
I touched on this quite a bit, but I’ll double down on the human experience for me as playing a role in shaping this collection. Like most of my collabs, there’s a real human aspect to how I choose brands to work with. Does it have a real, genuine, human connection to my life? And then, how does that influence or impact my artistry. 7-Eleven was a no-brainer in a sense that this brand has been with me my entire life, playing a very simple role. This was a chance to really pay homage to that.
Looking ahead, how do you see your work continuing to evolve, and are there any projects or collaborations you’re particularly excited about?
Simple. I want to go bigger. I want to be better at my craft. I’m excited about an art show because it’s been a year since my show in LA. I want to connect with more collectors. I love the collabs and product drops, but I really want to continue embracing true artistry and the people who love it as much as those of us who create it.
Blue The Great’s Oh Thank Heaven collection is a testament to the power of art to bridge the past and present, blending nostalgia with forward-thinking creativity. It’s a celebration of the moments and influences that shaped him, from childhood skate sessions to his current journey as an artist and father. Through this collaboration with 7-Eleven, Blue invites us all to reconnect with our inner child, embrace life’s colorful chaos, and find joy in the everyday. As Blue looks ahead to even bigger projects, Oh Thank Heaven reminds us that art, like life, is best when it’s authentic, personal, and full of heart.
